Are airlines responsible for lost items?
-
JetSMART Airlines is partially responsible for lost items, depending on where and how the item was lost:
🧳 1. Checked-in baggage (YES – Airline is responsible)
JetSMART is responsible for checked baggage that is delayed, damaged, or lost, under international aviation laws like the Montreal Convention.
âś… What they cover:
Lost suitcases or items inside them (if packed appropriately)
Baggage delayed beyond 21 days is considered lost
Compensation is limited unless extra value was declared at check-in
đź’° Compensation limit:
Up to 1,288 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per passenger (~USD 1,600)
2. Items left in the cabin (NO – Airline is not responsible)
If you leave personal items onboard (e.g., mobile phone, headphones, wallets), JetSMART does not take liability for these.
What to do:
Contact the arrival airport’s Lost and Found office
The JetSMART crew typically turns forgotten items over to airport authorities
Provide flight details, seat number, and item description to improve recovery chances.
3. Valuable or restricted items in checked baggage (Not covered)
JetSMART explicitly excludes liability for certain items if placed in checked luggage:
Items not covered:
Cash, jewelry, electronics, passports
Perishable or fragile goods
Business documents
These should be carried in hand baggage. If they’re lost, JetSMART likely won’t reimburse you.
