Are Airport responsible for lost items?
-
Airports like Olsztyn–Mazury typically do not assume liability for lost items themselves. Here’s the breakdown:
🛄 Who is responsible for lost items?
1. Airline (air carrier) responsibility
For lost or damaged checked baggage, liability and compensation are governed by the Montreal Convention. The carrier (airline) is responsible—not the airport. This includes reporting the loss at the Airport, filling out a Property Irregularity Report, and submitting claims within set timeframes (e.g., 7 days for damaged baggage, 21 days for delayed baggage, up to 2 years for lost items).
2. Airport's role
Reporting and holding found items: If something is left in an airport area or at security, you're supposed to report it to the Lost & Found office at Olsztyn–Mazury. They collect and store items, but they do not offer compensation .
They must not cover value of lost items—that duty lies with airlines under international regulations, or for property lost outside flights, perhaps with local authorities.
