Are airlines responsible for lost items?
-
Yes, TUI Airways is responsible for lost items, but the level of responsibility depends on:
🔹 Where the Item Was Lost
✅ Checked Baggage
If your item was in your checked baggage, TUI Airways is responsible under the Montreal Convention, which sets global rules for airline liability.
Compensation Limit: Up to ~€1,600 (approx. £1,370) per passenger.
You must report the loss within 21 days of your flight if the baggage never arrives.
You can claim for:
Lost clothes and personal items
Toiletries
Luggage itself
But TUI does not cover full value of luxury goods (jewelry, electronics, cash, etc.) unless declared in advance.
❌ Cabin (Carry-On) Baggage or Personal Items Left Onboard
For items left on the plane, such as:
Wallets, phones, passports
Headphones, books, jackets
👉 TUI does not guarantee responsibility for lost or forgotten personal items onboard, though they will try to help recover them through their Lost & Found department.
You must:
Contact TUI Lost Property (via airport Lost & Found office)
Provide full description of the item and flight info
TUI may return it if found, but they are not legally liable.
